Pet insurance
For your pet’s accidents and illnesses — high vet bills and their financial consequences.
Why this matters
The dog swallows a foreign object on a walk, the cat is hit by a car – and suddenly an emergency operation is needed, with a bill that quickly runs into the thousands. There is no basic insurance for animals as there is for people: without a policy, you pay for every treatment out of your own pocket. In the worst case, you find yourself thinking about money at the treatment table instead of about your animal.
Pet health insurance is voluntary in Switzerland. It pays off most while the animal is young and healthy – and for breeds with known vulnerabilities, in the joints or airways, for example. Not to be confused: damage your dog causes to third parties belongs in your personal liability insurance, and depending on the canton, this cover is even compulsory for dog owners. Pet insurance, by contrast, looks after your own animal’s health costs.
What you get out of it
Vet bills of several thousand francs will no longer catch you unprepared.
Operations, medication and therapies are insured depending on the cover.
At the vet's, you decide based on your animal's wellbeing, not your wallet.
What we take care of for you
- Comparison of providers for dogs and cats by benefits and excess
- Review of waiting periods and age limits
- Inclusion of accident, illness and dental treatment
- Support when benefits are claimed
The advice is free for you — we are remunerated by the insurance companies through brokerage commissions and will disclose these on request.
Tips from our consultations
What we tell our clients time and again – free of charge, even before the first meeting.
Practically all providers exclude pre-existing conditions – once diagnosed, it stays out. Insure the puppy or kitten early and you secure full protection. For older animals, acceptance is often no longer possible at all.
What matter are the annual limit, the co-payment and the list of exclusions – breed-typical conditions, for example. A cheap policy that covers only a fraction when it counts is no bargain. Put the offers side by side, point by point.
A higher retention lowers the premium noticeably. If you can comfortably pay smaller vet bills yourself, you insure the big risks specifically – usually the most efficient solution. Calculate both variants over several years.
Check that your personal liability insurance includes pet ownership before anything happens. If your dog causes a bicycle fall or a rear-end collision, you as the owner are liable – such claims can get very expensive. Your canton of residence determines whether this cover is compulsory.
