Why this matters

A dismissal you believe is abusive, a car repair that costs twice the quote, a dispute with the property management over the service-charge statement: legal cases arise in the middle of everyday life. Without legal protection, lawyers’ and court costs quickly reaching several thousand francs are at stake – and the losing party often bears the other side’s costs as well. Many people therefore give up enforcing their rights, even though they hold good cards.

Legal protection insurance is voluntary in Switzerland but especially valuable for certain groups: tenants, employees and anyone regularly out on the roads. Important to know: conflicts that already exist or are foreseeable when you sign are not insured – the policy must be in place before the fire starts. Family policies usually cover the whole household, often including children in education.

Tips from our consultations

What we tell our clients time and again – free of charge, even before the first meeting.

Take out cover before the fire starts

Legal protection works only for cases whose cause arises after the start of the contract, and many areas additionally carry waiting periods of a few months. If you only sign after your employer’s letter of dismissal, you walk away empty-handed. Think of the policy while everything is still calm.

Look closely at the exclusions

Family and inheritance law, divorce or disputes around home ownership are, depending on the provider, excluded or covered on an advisory basis only. So compare not just the premium but the list of insured areas of law. That is exactly where the offers differ most.

Combine traffic and private legal protection

Traffic legal protection covers you not just at the wheel but usually also on foot, on your bike and on public transport. Both modules in one policy are generally cheaper than two separate contracts. So even if you don’t own a car, don’t be too quick to drop the traffic component.

Call first, then act

Report a looming case to the insurer before you instruct a lawyer yourself – otherwise you risk being left with the costs. Often the first piece of advice already clarifies whether proceedings are worthwhile. That spares you many a dispute before it gets expensive.
