Why this matters

A moment’s inattention in the roundabout, a fall on loose chippings in spring – and suddenly there is damage to your own machine, your gear and possibly other people’s vehicles. Without casco cover, you carry the repair or total loss of your own bike entirely yourself, and it can easily be worth five figures. Theft, too, hits the uninsured hard: the machine is gone, and so are the savings.

Third-party liability insurance is required by law in Switzerland for every registered motorbike – without it there is no number plate. Partial and fully comprehensive cover, by contrast, are voluntary and worthwhile above all for newer or valuable machines; with leasing, fully comprehensive cover is generally required. Incidentally, your own medical costs after an accident do not run through the motorbike insurance but through your accident insurance – all the more important that the two covers are properly aligned.

What you get out of it

Cover based on use: seasonal number plates and a winter break save on premiums.

Equipment and accessories can be included in the cover.

Tips from our consultations

What we tell our clients time and again – free of charge, even before the first meeting.

Look into an interchangeable number plate

If you never use the car and the motorbike at the same time, you can register both vehicles on one interchangeable number plate. The vehicle carrying the plates is the one insured – which often pushes the total premium down noticeably. Ask whether it adds up for your combination.

Have your gear explicitly included

Helmet, leathers, gloves and boots quickly add up to several thousand francs. In many policies, they are covered only if expressly included. Clarify this point before signing – after the crash it is too late.

Adjust the casco cover to the current value

On a new machine, fully comprehensive cover is money well spent; on a ten-year-old motorbike, often no longer. Compare the casco premium with the current value of the vehicle and downgrade to partial casco in good time. It is one of the simplest money-saving tricks there is.

Factor in gross negligence

In cases of gross negligence – such as driving well above the speed limit – the insurer may reduce its benefits. Many companies offer a waiver of this right of reduction as an add-on. For people who drive a lot, it is a sensible module at a manageable extra cost.
